Peugeot’s 208 has been crowned Car of The Year 2020.

It beat its nearest rival, the Tesla Model 3, by 39 points. The other finalists, in descending order, were the Porsche Taycan, Renault Clio, Ford Puma, Toyota Corolla and BMW 1 Series.

Jean-Philippe Imparato, Executive Vice President of the Peugeot brand, said the award was a “great honour.”

Peugeot has enjoyed notable success at Car of the Year in recent years, winning in 2014 with the 308 and in 2017 with the 3008.

The award ceremony was streamed online from the Palexpo exhibition centre in Geneva without the presence of journalists. For the past nine years, the award has opened the Geneva International Motor Show, which has been cancelled this year following the Swiss government’s decision to ban public events of more than 1000 people to limit the spread of coronavirus.

The Car of the Year award was founded in 1964 and is organised by seven magazines from across Europe. Sixty jury members from 23 countries allocated 25 points each to at least five of the seven shortlisted cars.
