Mitch Evans and Jaguar racing recorded their first Formula E victory at the Rome E-Prix after winning a close battle with Techeetah's Andre Lotterer. Stoffel Vandoorne got his first podium despite suffering a failure at the end.

It was a chaotic race as Dragon Racing's Jose Maria Lopez lost control at Turn 16 and ploughed into the wall, catching out the unsighted Gary Paffett and Jean-Eric Vergne. This brought out the red flag which lasted for more than 45 minutes.

Evans was the seventh different winner in seven races in Season 5. Starting on the front row Evans took the lead from polesitter Andre Lotterer on lap 16 when he attempted a cutback at the Turn 10 right-hander before pulling alongside the DS Techeetah at the Turn 11/12 chicane. There was minor contact between the two as Evans passed into the lead of the race.

The top two finished well clear of the third-placed Stoffel Vandoorne, who stopped on the track after the race with a suspected broken driveshaft, despite Venturi providing the team with an update to its troublesome part ahead of the race.
