Buying a car can be both exciting and scary at the same time. For a start, it is such a huge purchase, no matter how much money you have. Especially for young buyers, their inexperience can be a huge factor affecting their decision. As a formal car salesman, let me guide you through a bit of the whole process.

1. Meet and greet

Of course, when you set foot on the dealership, the salesman has to give you a proper warm welcome. You are their potential buyers. And you wouldn’t want to buy anything from a rude seller either. Then you’ll be shown around your car of interest. Now, from this point on, listen carefully to what the salesman says. Remember that their job is to sell you a car. An honest salesman will give you correct information, while focusing on technologies or details that might interest you. The bad one, however, doesn’t care about correctness. They will use their confidence and their speedy mouth to fool you. I once saw one of my colleagues, let’s call him Lewis, stood in front of basic Nissan Xtrail and told his customer that it had a 2.5 litre engine, 18-inch wheel, electric bootlid and some other fancy features. The basic version of an Xtrail that time only had a 2.0 litre engine, 17-inch wheel and lack every extra technology existed on the top version. But salesmen like him don’t care. As long as you, the customer, show any interest. But don’t be put off by that just yet. After all, you know the car, right? If you’ve done thorough research before coming to the dealership, then it doesn’t really matter too much what the salesman says. In a lot of cases, young buyers tend to be fooled by the slick and quick tongue. Other time it could just because they like the car too much to actually care, which is equally as bad. Either way, it is crucial to be aware at all time. Especially if the lies come out at an alarming rate, it’s time you left the dealership right away.

2. Test drive

This is an essential part of buying any car. Test driving is your chance to get a feel of how the car handles. It’s going to be your travel buddy for several years so it better be something you enjoy to drive. There’s no point in buying a car that you’ll eventually hate. Even if you only consider it just a means of transport, it should be something you are comfortable with. In case the car is a used one, which is most likely since it’s your first car, try to listen to any strange noise it makes when driving. It could be clunking noise when you turn or brake, grinding manual transmission, knocking engine, etc. Any of the mentioned noise is a warning you must take note. You might have to spend extra cash, even more than you pay for the car, to fix everything. Also, before getting into the driving seat, check any sign of rust or body damage. That shiny looking car might have been through some nasty accident. Inspect the car carefully and patiently, it will save you a lot of money later. Testing out the technologies is also very important. Don’t be hesitate to ask the salesman to demonstrate to you how to use them. Especially with the infotainment, some cars have very complicate steps to use and take a lot of time to get used to. The Nissan Xtrail’s system is one example for this. It can connect to multiple phones in the cars to get pictures, music, etc but getting them to work requires a lot of hassle. Even more frustrating, should the phones operated by different OS, then good luck trying to connect properly. Even when we, the salesmen, practice with an instructor, it takes several days to get used to the system. Infotainment is also prone to not working properly. Better check them before actually buying the car so you can avoid any annoyance later.

3. The Extras

Okay, so everything’s well and good. Now that you love the car, and you want to buy it right now. This comes to the most important part, payment. But hold up, there are some extras that your salesman didn’t mention before. Paint protection, extended warranty, leather seats, etc. Be wary with them. Although they are not much, but some of them you don’t actually need at all. As a young customer with a tight budget, the more unnecessary accessories you can avoid the better. What Lewis trying to do is to benefit off your naive purchase. Not all salesmen do this. Many of them try to sell you the car first, then offer you the extra bits. It’s easier for you to say “no” since you think you have to pay more. Lewis, on the other hand, put them in with the price. He then gives you a “discount”. You’ll feel like you just got a bargain when, in reality, you can just go on the internet and but those “extras” with even lower price. Keep in mind, not all of them are bad or unnecessary. What you should do in that situation is to evaluation the necessity of such items for you. Check their availability online to see if you can get it cheaper by yourself. Again, do research before you buy your car. You waste no time in doing so.
